Music Journalist

For 7 years I was responsible for my own music site called Platendraaier. This was an online music magazine about vinyl and info related to music, such as record stores (Europe), music fairs (Europe), album covers, and concert venues. In addition, I wrote album- and festival reviews, created songs- and album lists, and shared information about sound equipment. Different people worked for the magazine and as the editor in chief, I was also responsible for all the content we created. In 2014 and 2015 I organized the yearly election for the best records stores in The Netherlands. The website received over 150.000 unique visitors in 2017 and had a large following on social media. With my specialization in SEO (Search Engine Optimization) the website was highly ranked in Google and I updated the website regularly to see what kind of improvements had en affect on the ranking.

– Wrote about 130 in-depth album reviews;
– Created background stories for more than 400 songs;
– Discussed 130 music documentaries;
– Told about the creation of 200 record covers;
– Developed over 30 music lists;
– Drafting comprehensive articles about sound equipment.

Since 2012 I’m traveling to different parts of the world to discover countries and other cultures. During the years I’ve visited many places in Asia (Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, India, and Indonesia),  Central and South America (Peru and Cuba) and Africa (Egypt). The best part of traveling is to learn about other cultures, meeting the locals, and alternating between visiting urban areas and nature. Besides, it’s the best way to learn about the different ways people live and to discover that living in a free country cannot be taken for granted. As I’m living in a country with many possibilities and good health care I’ve learned that taking care of other people is important. Even if you can do a small thing for the people out there (for example buying stuff in stores who give the money to local organizations) it’s something that will give you more understanding about how lucky we are to live in a society where everything is well organized.

I’m Hugo, a twenty-nine-year-old guy from The Netherlands who’s working as Brand Manager for a music label. I’m interested in all kinds of subjects related to the online web, such as web development, social media, SEO, advertising, and analytics.

In my spare time, I like to spend time on my love for music. I’ve got a large collection of vinyl records covering all kinds of music genres (rock, jazz, blues, folk, country, indie etc.).  Besides listening to music I often go to concerts.

In the last couple of years, I backpacked through different parts of Asia and Central and South America. The best part of traveling is to learn about other cultures, meeting the locals, and alternating between visiting urban areas and nature.

Besides my studies, I practiced athletics for over eighteen years. Specifically aimed at long distances, where I’ve increased the duration and intensity of the running sessions over the years. The performance became better and better, but I got a backlash after the summer of 2012. Then I tried to rebuild the workouts for different periods of time. I decided to stop running after yet another setback in February 2014. After cycling for years on my mountain bike I decided to start running again in the summer of 2018. Nowadays I’m running 1 or 2 times a week and cycling over 150K a week. A few times a year I participate in a running event, mostly 10K (35-36 minutes) or 15K (54-56 minutes).

Other hobbies: visiting musea, going to the movies, making city trips, cooking and baking, reading (fiction and non-fiction).
